Folding@Home: New GPU3 (version 6.41) client released
Posted by admin / Under Folding Bicycle
The latest GPU3 client is now on our high performance client download page. This new client improves GPU identification and has several other minor improvements. For those who are unfamiliar with the other FAH clients: there are several types of high performance clients. SMP refers to multi-core CPUs. GPU3 refers to the latest generation Folding@home GPU client. Currently, GPU3 is only available for NVIDIA GPUs, but we are working on a GPU3 release for ATI. For NVIDIA GPUs, we recommend GPU3. For ATI, we suggest GPU2 until GPU3 has passed through its QA testing (going on now). Finally, the v7...

Folding@Home - FAH results on Influenza
Posted by admin / Under Folding Bicycle
SUMMARY. The influenza virus infects people and animals by binding to complex sugar molecules on the surface of the respiratory tract. Bird viruses bind most strongly to bird cell-surface sugars and human viruses bind most strongly to human cell-surface sugars. As the recent swine-origin influenza virus has demonstrated, there is considerable overlap between the binding ability of human and pig viruses to cells of the other host. Changes to this binding affinity are one key component for viruses to make a jump between species, and it is difficult to predict the necessary mutations ahead of time. We would like to...

Folding@Home and Energy Use
Posted by admin / Under Folding Bicycle
Another site I am on is trying to start a small folding team. One "green" activist is trying to make the case that you would be better off sending money directly to cancer researchers rather than wasting energy by folding. His argument is that projects like folding and SETI have been wasting time and energy for years with nothing to show for it and all you are doing is putting money in the pockets of electric company executives. Are there any studies that show how much it costs to run folding 24/7 as opposed to just letting your pc sit...

Grid of 100,000 computers heralds new internet dawn
Posted by admin / Under Folding Bicycle
A network of 100,000 computers providing the greatest data processing capacity yet unleashed has been created to cope with information pouring from the worlds largest machine. The Grid is the latest evolution of the internet and the world wide web and computer scientists will announce on Friday that it is ready to be connected to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It is designed for schemes where huge quantities of data need crunching, such as large research and engineering projects. The Grid has the kind of power required to download movies in seconds, and the ability to make high-definition video phone...

Folding@Home Now I'm At 149
Posted by admin / Under Folding Bicycle
I made it into the top 200 on June 14. Since then I've added a third pc so it only took me less than 4 months to move up another 50 places. Personally, if I had my druthers I'd rather see more active members so it was more challenging to everyone. It's kind of sad that a site as big as Freerepublic only has 167 active members on their folding team. You need to get more involved, people, it's easy!
